Iceland Residency

Community-Led

Design and Public Art

These workshops occurred during

Georgia’s artist residency at The

Fish Factor in Stöðvarfjörður, a

remote village in the Eastfjords of

Iceland with a population of ap-

proximately 200 inhabitants. In a

location where the dramatic land-

scape can feel both majestic and

isolating, the “window” became

a space to explore the intersection

of daily life and ancient Icelandic

folklore.

Working directly with the local

community, Georgia led work-

shops where children and families

were invited to design their “ide-

al” window. These sessions were

fueled by a playful atmosphere,

reflecting the vibrant spirit of the

town’s youngest residents. They

discussed local myths, where

hidden people and elven folklore

dwell in the mountains, blending

these legends with the children’s

own whimsical imaginations.

Georgia translated these collective designs into the mural on the Fish Factory’s building, capturing each window designed by the participants, transforming the town’s shared stories into a permanent public testimony.
